Will you come with me and help me be brave? Can you help Dougie on his adventure?
Yes!
Hi Dougie! I'm your nurse Sarah. I will be looking after you and your parents today before your surgery. Will you take a seat before the doctors talk to you?
Before surgery Nurse Sarah will talk to Dougie about his operation and explain to him everything that will happen. Nurse Sarah is friendly and makes Dougie feel better.

The waiting room is loud and a bit scary but Dougie sits in the waiting room and waits for a doctor to talk to him like Nurse Sarah asked. Dougie is feeling a bit bored now, and wishes he was back in school.

It is now Dougie's turn to see the doctor. The doctor asks Dougie to sit on the bed. The bed is very big and Dougie is worried, how will he ever get up there? Luckily, Dougie's dad picks him up helps him.

Hi Dougie. I am your anaesthetist. My job is to look after you during surgery. We will send you to sleep with special medicine and then wake you up when the surgeons are done.
What does an anaesthetist do?

Dougie we are going into the anaesthetic room now. It is a room next to the operating room where you get to have a nice long sleep! Before you go to sleep I have a fun tablet you can use. One of your parents is allowed into the anaesthetic room with you when you go to sleep.
What happens in the anaesthetic room?
Now Dougie is asleep I will operate on her. I will try to make it as quick as possible. I will try to make as painless as possible. I can give her medicine to make her hurt less after surgery as well.
What happens in surgery?
Dougie's surgery is all done now and she is in the recovery room. The kind nurses are looking after her until she wakes up
What happens after surgery?

I had the best dream today! I dreamt that I was swimming through chocolate, yummy! I woke up from surgery and mummy and daddy were sat next to me.
When can I go home?
Dougie you can go home now. Your operation is all done and everything went well. I can give your parents some medicine to take home so if you feel sick they can give it to you.
Thanks!

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for coming with me and helping me through my day at the hospital. Although I found it scary at first the doctors and nurses were nice and mummy and daddy were with me the whole time. The nurses gave me medicine to take the pain away. Now I have a cool cast that I am going to get all my friends to sign at school!
